Artist residencies. Art and gastronomy in Alentejo.
COMER COM OS OLHOS (Eating with the Eyes) is a programme that brings together contemporary visual arts and the gastronomic heritage of Alentejo, promoting new ways of thinking about, creating and representing Portuguese cultural heritage. This first edition took “scarcity” as its theme for reflection and creation, challenging artists and gastronomes to explore the limits and possibilities of lack, of resources, of references, of narratives, as a driver for new cultural practices.
The project took the form of three two-week artist residencies, each pairing a visual artist with a food professional (chef, cook, food designer or critic). Each residency had two phases: a week of sharing and training, with workshops, talks, study visits, cooking demonstrations and tastings, followed by a week of individual work with curatorial support. Each residency ended with a public presentation in the form of a dinner-artwork.
